Wildlife

Kerala has earned a well accepted name as “God’s own country”. True, I as a Keralite travel enthusiast would like to add “in God’s own country” here is the “God’s own forests”; virgin, clean, rich in fauna & flora, lush green, unpolluted, vast lakes etc not to speak of variety of wild life- wild elephants, bisons, bears, deer and rich complement of not so seen birds. I am speaking of “Parambikulam Tiger Reserve”, a unique experience it would be for wild life enthusiast, I am certain.

Kerala stands out with its geographical features, if you observe; on the west the vast coast line of Arabian sea, stretching more than 600 kilometers and in the east, the Western Ghats embellished by rich forests, dams and tourist resorts in between manmade estates here and there. Tourist resorts famous and well known are from Ponmudi in Thrivantanthapuram district in the south to Wayanad in the north adjacent to Nilgiris.

A herd of wild elephants spotted gracing in the wilderness

"At around midnight, some thing was growling ferociously and thumping vigorously at our closed wooden door. All of us woke up startled. The 4 paneled doors were forcefully swaying in and out to its breaking point, and we were afraid it will break open anytime. "

There is a wide gap of 30 to 40 kilometers in the Western Ghats in Palakkad district and in Palakkad district close to Pollachi in Tamilnadu is our famed but not fully explored Parmbikulam Tiger Reserve. The approach by road is from the road in between Palakkad and Pollachi and once you reach there, it is a different world, I am sure about it.

What makes Parambikulam unique?

Simply, it is abundance of wild life, both wild animals and birds coupled with rich landscape, vast lakes, and unspoiled teak plants( world’s oldest teak plant by name “Konnimera “ is reported to be in this forest) make this vast area of 400 square kilometers of forest really unique. Where else can you spot wild animals like tigers and herds of bisons in serene forest.

Rafting in the forest lake under tourists guides’ care is another adventure, worth a life time. This is indeed a well preserved unique forest luxurious in landscape, abundance of wild life and that too well taken care of.

Now a days, private resorts/tree top cottages etc are available to discernable and serious wild life enthusiast. But plan your journey well, you are sure to enjoy the pristine beauty and sure to encounter wild life in its natural habitat.

It will be a life time experience.

A nightmarish experience

It happened nearly 3 decades ago, but it gives shivers to think about it even now – and it happened during our families first visit to Parambikulam forest reserve.

We went with family and a few friends as guests of my friend who was a police official and we were put up in Tamilnadu Government guest house. An ideally located bungalow  overlooking the vast Parambikulam lake and deep into the forest. A vast well maintained garden in the front and the bungalow was custom built to protect against attacks from wild elephants, in as much as all the rooms were open to a closed backyard which has a escape tower with a steep stair case so that elephants cannot climb.  The corridor in front of the room was also too narrow for elephants to approach.

My two daughters were very young; 5 and 3 years old and thus were playing around in the garden in the evening running about in wild abandon and enjoying the lavish supply of sweets we were provided with.  Unknowingly, they were strewing pieces of sweets all around the place.

We retired to our room after a sumptuous dinner, which was the second room from the front in the oval shaped bungalow; the first room was occupied by our friends and relatives. In our room, my daughters slept with their aunt in a makeshift bed on the floor, while we rested in the bed. There was night bulb burning in the corridor, giving us some light. It was a calm and quiet night and by midnight it all began to happen.

A bird's eye view of the lake.

Some thing was growling ferociously and thumping vigorously at our closed wooden door. All of us woke up startled. The 4 paneled doors were forcefully swaying in and out to its breaking point, and we were afraid it will break open anytime. We understood it was a wild animal at our door, trying to break in.  True, it was a wild bear coming in search for the balance of sweets left near the door by my daughters. My wife, startled and totally frightened tried to wake up our friends in the next room; no luck. As in between there were adjoining bathrooms and the thumping on the bathroom walls would not awake them.

My wife had the presence of mind to slowly approach the door switch on all on all lights rooms and corridor. Suddenly, growling wildly in dissent. To our relief, the large bear dashed through the corridor and disappeared into the thicket nearby accompanied by the barking sound of stray dogs.

As luck would have it, all these commotion woke up our friends sleeping in the adjoining room and they opened the door and came out enquiring to our room, just as the bear disappeared – luckily so, had they came out a few seconds earlier, they would have come face to face with an retreating angry bear right in the corridor of the bungalow.

Forest guards next day told us of the presence of these wild bear in the vicinity of the guest house.

An experience we could never forget. Even today.
