"People live in religious harmony and while visiting Kerala you would do well to respect the culture and heritage of the state. It will help you greatly if you make note of the decorum to maintain and the dress codes, if any, for visiting the religious places. "

And let’s begin from the time of your planning.

Decide on the season and duration of your travel: While each season in Kerala is unique and offers its own experience, the peak season and the best time ranges from September to March. During these months, weather is perfect with sunny skies, it’s pleasant for travelers to enjoy their time covering beaches, hill stations and backwaters. April-September is considered ‘off period.’ April-May dissuade people due to the humid weather. However, off season could the ideal time for you if you’re budget constrained as you get everything at a reduced rate right from air tickets to hotel rooms and transportation vehicles. Also less crowd ensures more of pampering from resorts and tour operators!

Since Kerala has so many lucrative destinations to offer, it requires a lot of time if you want explore fully. Therefore, make sure to allocate a good number of days towards your travel. Also, finalize the number of days/hours to be spent on your destinations.

Prepare a checklist: This forms the most integral part of your meticulous planning and the subsequent execution. As the travel time approaches, jot down everything you will need during the travel. Don’t leave it to the last moment. Remember to keep it to the point and apt. This should include your luggage datails/count/types too.

Sorting inside the luggage and hand bag: Try to carry light ones and remember not to fill them to the neck. Spare some for your shopping! Foresee your needs and list those items. Pack clothes as per the season of your travel. Kerala has a balanced climate throughout the year and you do not experience extreme hot or cold. However, carry woolen clothes if your itinerary includes Munnar or Thekkady as they are cold places. And it will be rainy season from June to end of August. Avoid carrying too much cash and carry as less jewelry as possible. Sort out and pack things in groups to avoid searching for small things like your razor through the bag. Pack your hand-luggage properly. Keep frequently required things accessible here. It should contain travel documents, Id cards, tickets, electronic items and other important things.

Keep your emergency kit handy: A well packed medical kit is very important due to the weather conditions and will be handy at times. Fill your kit with the most necessary items like band-aids, balms, allergy medicines, and few tablets for fever, cold, head ache, vomiting, etc. The medicine kit is very important as we often forget to take the medicines.

Lock the locations: You have definitely pre-decided on the locations you want to travel. However, we would like to suggest a few. Kochi(Cochin) is something you must visit and probably is your landing location. Kochi has a lot of sightseeing places which includes Marine drive (famous hangout of the locals walk ways in the Heart of the City facing backwaters), Chinese fishing net (see the unusual way of fishing), Fort Cochin, Dutch palace, Jewish synagogue, the swimming friendly Cherai beach, and Athirapally-Vazhachal waterfalls, the most famous and largest water fall in Kerala.

Munnar: A must see hill station and one of the most beautiful places in the state Places to visit in Munnar include Eravikulam national park (watch the Nilgiri thaws), Mattupetty Dam (famous for its still water which reflects the tea garden around), Cheeyappara Water Falls, Anamudi (the highest peak in south India) Devikulam (hill station with a awesome scenic beauty), Attukal waterfalls and Rose gardens.

Thekkady: The best place to visit if you are interested in wildlife & ecotourism activities. There is a boat ride in Thekkady which takes you around the Periyar wildlife sanctuary through the Periyar Lake. Don’t expect to see rare animals. You could see wild elephants, deer’s and monkeys etc.

While traveling these locations across cities, keep a tab on the timings of the places, if there is any particular dress required, distance between places and the time required along with mode of travel, and what precautions to be taken in each of the spots you visit.

Choose the right vehicle: While choosing of vehicle is based on your comfort level, pick one based on the number of people travelling together and the distance to be traveled. Go for Toyota Innova type vehicles for 4 to 7 persons; small hatchbacks are good for 1 to 3 persons.

Stop to shop: While traveling one cannot miss this piece, especially when you are visiting truly exotic destination like Kerala. You will come across a wide range of items that reflects the culture, history, Art & Socio-religious aspect of the state. We would like to suggest you to pick up souvenirs like Aranmula Kannadi (metal mirror), Mural paintings, Kasavu saree (sari with golden brocade), Nettor petti (Traditional Jewellery box), Nettipatham (Caparison of Elephant), Kathakali models, and coir products. Also dont forget pick up some exoctic spices of your choice!

Relish the cuisine: Similar to most other states of India Kerala also offers its own traditional varieties of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes cuisines. Being a land of spices, the food is spicy. You can also try out various non spicy dishes like Appams, Idllis etc. It’s a heaven if you a non-vegetarian and the sea foods are something that you can’t afford to miss.

Religion, festivals and the people: Kerala is a mixture of different faiths, with plenty of churches, mosques and temples. People live in religious harmony and while visiting Kerala you would do well to respect the culture and heritage of the state. It will help you greatly if you make note of the decorum to maintain and the dress codes, if any, for visiting the religious places. Festivals galore in Kerala. Some of the most popular festivals of Kerala include Onam, Thrissur pooram, Theyyam festival and the famous boat race in Alappuzha in the month of August.  Knowledge of local people and their customs always help when you travel the land. Kerala is popular for being very friendly and down to earth which is attributable to the highest literacy rate in India.

Ayurvedic treatment: Famous for its ayurvedic treatment and medicines, Kerala is a best place if you are planning any sort of ayurvedic treatment. Kerala has two renowned ayurvedic centers: Kottakal Arya Vaidya Shala in Kottakkal near Kozhikode and Vaidyarathnam Thaikkattussari Oushadashala near Thrissur. There are many other popular ayurvedic centers as well. Make sure to choose the authorized centers.

Words of caution: While traveling any place it is always better to exercise some cautions. You would be well if you avoid roadside food and displaying affection in public. Don’t accept food items from strangers. Avoid touching/ taking pictures of idols in temples of Kerala. Take caution against seasonal diseases during Monsoon. You may get really lucky to go very close to wild animals. But be very careful in such scenarios. Keep your safety as the first priority.
