Perumbalam, just 20 kilometres away from Kochi is a small island in Alappuzha district which was formed more than 1000 years ago. It can be said as an island lost in time as the total land area shrunk by the passage of time. With a population of just 10000 odd, Perumbalam is a very small island of 16 sqkms and a beautiful place to be visited. Though it is a small piece of land situated in Vembanad lake, it boasts of about 30 temples and tops the list of highest numbers PSC applicants from a place in Kerala. The only transportation means are Jhankar(to carry cars & trucks) and ferry. It is also a place which don’t have a police station. It is believed that Tipu Sultan on his conquering spree had set his feet in this this small island. 

Pre planning a trip to Perumbalam:

The best time to visit Perumbalam is during the winter months, from November to February, when the weather is pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities. While no specific permissions are needed to explore the region, it's advisable to check for any local events or festivals that might impact your travel plans. Pack essentials such as light cotton clothing, comfortable shoes for exploring, and mosquito repellents.

Since Perumbalam is an island with no road or bridge to neighbouring places, the only transportation medium is water/lake, and can reach there by boat. The place have about 10 plus boat jetty’s is various parts of the island and the major being Panavally, Vathikkad, Poothotta, South Paravoor etc. 
The ferry frequency is quite good and if you are planning to bring your car, you must be aware of the Jhankar timings, or you may get stuck. Timings from 2 major Jhankar points are given below:-

Monday to Saturday: 

  • From Poothotta: 7.30am, 8.45am, 9.45am, 11am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm, 4.15pm, 6pm, 7.15pm & 8.20pm
  • From Vathikad: 7.00am, 8.15am, 9.15am, 10.30am, 11.45am, 2.00pm, 3.30pm, 5.00pm, 6.30pm & 7.45pm

Sundays: 

  • From Poothotta: 8.30am,9.30am, 12.30pm, 4.15pm, 7.00pm & 8.00pm
  • From Vathikad: 8.00am, 9.00am, 12.00pm,3.30pm, 6.30pm & 7.30pm.

Best time to visit is between November to Feb. During monsoons also, the place look stunning; but accessing the location can be bit cumbersome.

Staying in Perumbalam:

Accommodation options in Perumbalam are very less. For budget travelers, guesthouses and homestays provide a cozy and authentic experience. Deluxe and premium options can be found in nearby towns, offering more amenities. Luxury resorts might be available a bit farther away, ensuring a peaceful retreat after exploring Perumbalam.

There are few stay facilities available from budget to expensive properties in this island and you will have to book them in advance.

How to reach Perumbalam:

  • By Road: From Aroor side the closest jetty/jankar is Panavally and from Tripunithura side the closest would be Poothotta. Perumbalam is well-connected by road. The nearest major town is Cherthala, approximately 20 kilometers away. From Cherthala, taxis or auto-rickshaws can be hired to reach Perumbalam.
  • By Rail:  The nearest railway station is Cherthala Railway Station which is a small station, which is well-connected to major cities in Kerala. Nearest major railway station is Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town. From the station, one can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach Perumbalam.
  • By Air: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, approximately 65 kilometers away. Taxis are readily available at the airport for a convenient journey to Perumbalam.
